Kolrosing with Darlene Fossum-Martin
Looking for something Nordic to take home with you? Take home not only a Nordic craft you made yourself, but the knowledge and skills that you can use for years to come. And you can use it in your kitchen daily! So let’s get koselig and learn the craft of kolrosing (coal-rose-ing). The techniques and designs that I will be teaching are centuries old and have their roots in Viking, Saami and Norwegian tradition.
Kolrosing, fine line decorating, consists of one cut with the tip of a sharp tool, rubbed with a ground bark or coffee, then oiled to enhance the design. You will start out with the basics of knife control, move from cutting straight lines to curved lines and techniques of shading to give your design depth.
Kolrosing was often used on wooden utilitarian objects, like spoons, cups, bowls and boxes. After practicing on a practice board you will move on to your main project, a butter spreader. Remember it’s only a one hour class. Uff da!
Kolrosing knives will be available for use or you may purchase your own for $32.00
Students will choose two patterns and they can kolrose on both sides of spreader with patterns which will be included in their kit. The spreader cost is $3.50.
Students should bring a mechanical pencil preferably with thin lead.
